The endangerment the trade puts on the population of aros.

They never will be....

Lets not forget why they are illegal in the U.S. Back in the 70's, they were actually legal in the U.S. They were so exploited, in such a short period of time, that they went onto the cites list in 1976.

They may be being bred by the thousands, but the demand for them is so high, that their numbers will be depleted just as fast. In order to be removed from cites, they have to be released into the wild, and numbers monitored for a few years until they are able to sustain. Which wouldn't happen due to their value and people would fish them out.

The real reason WHY they will never be taken of CITES is simple:

CITES recently received an Indonesian report that the asian arowana is still endangered throughout its range. Which is not that bad, BUT:
There are no current or planned research initiatives known from any range country that is home to the asian arowana, to study the conservation status of them. Because of this, there is no known scientific basis for downlisting them from appendix i.
Until data and proof is provided that they are no longer endanger in the wild, and presented to the USFWS, there is no reason to remove them from the list.

So, these countrys that the asian arowana are from will never finance research and conservation into removing them from endangered status. Why? they make so much money on them, why ruin such a big money maker?

SO:
Why are they endangered? because of the hobby.
Why will they never be removed from cites? because of the hobby.

Are you unaware that they are illegal in the US?
