Debarb your stingrays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just leave the barb, it is meant for defense. You will be stung if you press down on its back. Hand feeding at the top shouldn't be a problem.

Wow, Miles I never knew that...

How and why is this?

i heard if you do this they could bleed out??like cutting a dogs nails too short.

Its bone all they way thrugh.. :) So wont happen..

Its normal for them to lose their stinger if they make use of them.. :)

But again.. its kinda risky to reomve it.. And not only to the ray!

A 3" stinger in your arm sucks.. ;)

Except for the fact that Potamotrygon venom is way more toxic than Pterois venom. ;)

Freshwater stingrays do have venom that is twice as toxic as their saltwater living relatives.

But why do you think its stronger than Pterois venom?

if your really careful you should have nothing to worry about.... like firemedic said let the ray come to you...

I notice that when i go to the aquariums here in FLA they have all their cownoses and atlantics debarbed. They say they do this for both of our protection. I think its just for insurance purposes lol. Never really thought about it untill the last few years people are getting stabbed in the chest and stuff. SCARY!

THANKS!

i do not de-barb my ray.. the reason i dont want her to associate me with pain. i would think it would be the equivalent of me taking pliers and pulling your finger nail out.. most likely after doing this to you a couple times your going to be pissed at the sight of me.

When she naturally sheds her stinger (about twice a year) its important to get those old stingers out of the tank carefully, as they remain venomous. i remove them from the tank carefully with a long pair of hemostats, and drop it in bleach, then air dry them. After they are dry i tape them in sequence on a black insert in a photo album. over time this looks like a growth chart each being slightly longer than the one before.

I dont debarb or cover the barbs. When hand feeding I just hold some food along the edge of the pond just below the water line and let whoever wants it come to me, never had any close calls.

from the pic in your avitar it looks like you still have air line on your ray why is this its only ment to be placed on the sting for transit and removed as soon as you get the ray

by leaving the air line on it can cause problems

Just cos bone right the way through does not mean that it would not bleed as it attaches to the base of the barb on the tail...could the tail bleed?

The fact they shed them makes me doubt it but the this is timed by nature.

Anyone thinking of pulling out the barb should start with pulling out their own finger nails...after that try to get stung....in other words do not do it.
