My wife found this little guy at the LFS in the tank with the feeder fish, and she had to have him. He was about 3 inches long when she got him 3 months ago and is now at about 8 or 9 inches. I think he is a bullhead but can't seem to decide which kind. Any help on this would be great.

Hmmm I had one that looked like that and it was a bullhead. Couldn't tell you what kind though, some one else can chime in. Also I suggest posting this in the native section of MFK. They would be able to help you easily and much better there. Their crazy about their natives!

White chin barbels = yellow bullhead, Ameiurus natalis. Why fish so variable in color were named after colors I'll never understand. I have an 8" A. natalis that is even darker than yours.

These guys can be rough. Mine has killed fish twice his size.

That's a channel cat, not a bullhead...look at the tail, bullheads have a pretty square tail, while channels have a pretty deep fork. The head shape isn't right for a bullhead either.

It looks like a white bullhead, they have a forked tail and are endemic to your area. They are the largest of the bullhead catfish.

Channels don't have whiskers on top, do they?

*edit* Oh, it looks like they do, just smaller than a bullhead's whiskers.

The OP's cat does look very much like a channel.
