Debate on type of catfish..help please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
channel cat 100% the silverish coloration and the lack of any form of design, and the sharp features, imma have to say channel cat. had one for the longest time, then ick got him.

No deeply forked caudal fin, so not channel OR blue. However, it doesn't have a straight caudal fin either, so not brown, black or yellow bullhead. However, it is a Ameiurus (the one with a shallowly forked tail......) It is a white catfish as previously mentioned.

Awesome, thank you all I believe white is the answer, after looking up more info on them I can clearly tell thats what he/she is, now my wife will quit bugging me about her catfish lol

Yep, white. I have three baby whites just under 2" each. I have kept the three main species of bullheads before and they are very similar, but whites have forked tails AND white chin barbels. Only yellows and whites have white barbles, and no other bullhead has a forked tail. Nice find, I got mine in with feeders also.

Common names are no fun, common names hurt someone.

No such thing as a "White Bullhead".

Bullheads come in yellow, black, and brown.

Their Genus name is ameiurus.

They are however in a family (Ictaluridae. the north american catfishes) with a fish that has a common name of "White Bullhead".

The fish is actually a catfish, Ictalurus catus.

+1 to everyone that noticed the forked tail.

Quite possibly you are refering to Ameiurus catus?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ameiurus

Ameiurus is a genus of catfishes in the family Ictaluridae. It contains the three common types of bullhead catfish found in waters of the United States, the black bullhead (Ameiurus melas), the brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus), and the yellow bullhead (Ameiurus natalis), as well as other species, such as the white catfish (Ameiurus catus), which are not typically called "bullheads".

There are of course several bullhead catfish as well.

A. brunneus
A. catus
A. melas
A. natalis
A. nebulosus
A. platycephalus
A. serracanthus

I stand corrected good sir.

But let me point out something to you.

Ameirus catus and Ictalurus catus

Are actually one and the same fish. It was only recently that they decided that this fish is again...a bullhead. Has to do with the adipose fin...the tell tale Ictalurus caudal fin is not the end all in this discussion.

It has been a pleasure discussing with someone who knows their stuff.
