we made some of these in school for our tilapia tanks and they worked wonderfully at getting out larger debris. except ours were more cone like and had a computer controlled valve that would drain out the all the poop a few times a day with minimal waste of water. maby i can find a picture of one.

Pictures would be great.

Where did you get conical shaped traps?

Here are some modifications/additions; Clean out cap, bottom drain (>1/2" im thinking), Foam block. I also think, as suggested previously, that the chamber diameter should be larger
The only thing I don't like is the foam block. This adds another area of maintenance and clogging. I guess it depends on how you are using it. For me, it would be between the overflows and w/d. It would act as a sediment filter before it collects in the w/d which is a pain to clean. I don't know how I'd add it to canisters as the suction of the canister would probably defeat the purpose.

This thread will show you how to attach the 1" pipe to the main column

Yeah i know the foam will be a pain after time, i just needed something to try to stop all the large debris from going into the sump, or in your case a canister. Perhaps for canisters a very large diameter chamber can be used. I think i need to make a small scale version and test how well/poorly it works

we didnt buy then we made them. i think out of some sort of plastic that we welded together. maby polypropylene. You might be abe to find some place that sells them. Try places that sell aquaculture stuff since these seem to be used more for large scale systems. ive also thought of making one for my tanks tho to

It will work. I have a 14g trash can I use as a refugim. It sits on top of my w/d. I cleaned it out last night for the first time in over a year and the bottom was full of debris. If not for changing the plants out I wouldn't have known. One problem I see is the waterflow coming form the tank to the sump may be too high to let the debris settle before it moves on to the sump. My overflows push around 1,000 gph. I don't think my trashcan would be large enough for my tank. Right now it is feed off a separate small pump.

Interesting, i havn't seen those before.

And Danger Chicken, how much flow goes through your can?
I just clocked it at 90gph. The water area being used is 10hx10wx12l, about 5g.

I may use a 5gal water bottle (used for water coolers) which measures roughly 13" L and 11" Diameter, not incluging the bottleneck.

If i mount it upside down, the debris can gather at the neck and a drain can be placed to remove the build up.
