About three years back I had one of my credit card sent to collection I owe them about 200 dollars. Recently I received a letter from collection agency telling my bill now for that card is 400 dollars!!

Can they do that?

What can I do I dont want to pay them 400 cause I dont owe them 400 but if there is nothing I can do I would have to pay them.

Do we have any specialists in this area????

Please help thanks

^pretty much, but if its in a collection agency, then just settle for less. Just because u owe that much doesnt mean(if with a collection agency) u have to pay that much. ur bill may have been 200 bucks, but the collection agency didnt pay that much for it.

talk to them, be persistant, and PAY YOUR BILLS

Best bet is to work with collection agencies, not to avoid or ignore them. Talk with them if you can pay it all now they may reduce the amount. If you don't have the money, a payment schedule can be set up. You need to pay this or it will haunt you later in life when you want to buy something substantial.

Just call them and offer them the $200 and not a cent more. Tell them you will send it immediately once you receive a letter (or confirmation) that will satisfy the collection.
Stick to your guns, its 200 or nothing.
You will win.

Oh yea, and from now on pay your bills....

collections agencys are more or less vampires. if you do not pay you will have problems later on, I had a similar problem just a couple of weeks ago.. I try to pay my rent in advance but every year the rent increases, I was 2 months ahead on the rent since I see that as a way of saving ie you won't buy fish for the money. anyways, since I paid in advance I didn't even open the envelope until the next time I was supposed to pay my rent, in the envelope there was a note "you owe us 25$ because the rent went up in june", the same day a collectors letter showed up on my floor so I called them, explained the situation etc. they wouldn't settle for anything less than 250$. so, pay your bills the way THEY want you to pay it.

I had the same problem with a $500 card debt that I ended up basically avoiding because it gave me anxiety to look at (it was my first card at 18 years old). The bill got up to $900 because of the interest and missed payments. It went into collections, and I settled for $450 over 3 payments. It is so worth it to just pay the bill in the first place and avoid the whole headache. Even if you cannot pay the full amount at once. It is money you owe and it will not go away, it will just screw your credit score for future cards/loans.

wow,......... $400,

just a couple of years ago, I had stuff in collection that added up to about $15,000

a lot of settling later I ended up paying like half of that

at some point, they know that someone just said "screw it" and lets their credit go to the crappers and they'd rather get something from you then nothing

I think at some point between the credit card company you owe money to and the collection agency they stop charging late fees and the balance stops going up. but buy that time your credit is screwed. if you ever want to finance a car or buy a house you won't be able to

fixing my credit was like a ton of bricks off my back.
