Debt Collector Problem

if the debt is legit, call them offer half if you can pay right away. otherwise make payment arrangements if needed.

Make sure they send you a letter stating that they are authorized to collect this debt. Have the letter state your original debtors name , with that account number they bought listed.

You also want a written statement saying debt is satisfied in full once paid ,otherwise they can sell the remaining debt to another agency.

Do not give a collection agency credit card numbers, or banking information.
Pay with a money order...

While most debt collectors are legit this area of business is full of bottom feeders going in and out of business. leaving you in the lurch. with no recourse. Anyone can become a debt collector.

thats why you set up a payment plan... you can even pick your minimum pay it everymonth and you have no issues... I had to do it for a hospital bill and I never got charged a cent more so long as I paid my choosen agreed minimum.

IMO, the best solution to get out of debt is to go to your bank and explain the issue.

Bring statments from your credit card companys, come up with a plan... explain that you'd like to take out a loan to "consolidate your debt" ...

The bank will
a) be glad your getting out of debt, because the bank wont lose the money your "lending them" when you leave it your account
b) be glad to give you a loan because they will make interest of it.

bank interest will be FAR less then your credit card.

If you have an account with a bank there going to see your making normal deposits, that you have assets, etc. Unless you don't then that'll be a slightly harder situation to get out of. I've heard of many people going to the bank and explain the situation and getting there life back together.

I hear ya bud, lotta people having a hard time now and being no fault of their own. Nobody should be giving anyone a hard time about their financials in these economic times.

yeah my boyfriend had a collector calling him and towards the end he guy was saying they were taking my boyfriends Drivers license ..and kept threatening him..they stopped calling when we laughed at them for threatening ..when it was for a towed car that the insurance company had payed us for after a crash, and the ins company refused to take responsibility.

When i first lost my job i tried keeping in contact with a medical bill ...asked to drop my payment for a few months so i could keep every thing going...ONE month later they sent me to collectors..probably will never pay them.
