How about maintenance ... ? My monster tank generates so much waste already, but you have many more monsters and some of them are HUGE! How do you keep your substrate clean and what is your maintenance routine?

I built a 120 gal sump filter, with large foam prefilter, 60 gal bio balls, approx 15 kgs biomax, then more fine foam before the pumps. It runs on 2 magdrive 24's pumps which net about 3400-3600 gal/hr rate this helps carry waste to the filter where it's easier to remove, I also installed a fluval 404 full of biohome that pumps water through a coralife 36 watts 12x UV sterilizer and returns back into the sump. To help with Nitrates I installed a Korallin Sulfur biodenitrator S4002 which works very well, with no side effect so far. I change 30 % of the water weekly at a minimum, rinsing out the foam filters in the water getting pumped out. I add a small amount of doc wellfishes aquarium salt ( 3 tbs / 50 gallon) and black water extract for trace elements and seachem prime for conditioning. The glass needs a scrub every couple weeks and as for everything else inside the plecos look after.

Water quality is as follows:
Amonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 30 mg/L ( and dropping as denitrator loads )
Ph = 7.1
Temp = 83 F

Wow, this sounds way more difficult when I type it out, but its really not that hard. Total maintaince takes about 1.5 hrs a week, and I use a water pump and hose for draining and refilling from a 50 gal mixing tank that also is under the main tank.

Thanks for typing it all out. It's actually similar to what I do on my tank ... except mines less than half the size. I don't have UV as there's no problem with green water or algae in my tank. I do have 2 coil denitrators and I've already built (but not installed) a DSB in a bucket that I wanna test.

I also have many layers of wool/mats at the beginning of my filtration system, but none at the end before the pumps. Do you think it's necessary? (In other words, I'm interested in your reason for having them there cos I'm sure you have one..)

Do you test nitrate ... what level is yours at?

Sorry for all the questions, but you have a near perfect system and it's definately something to aspire to. Well done! :D
