As i have said in a previous post im upsizing tanks, previously when doing a water change i used exactly the right amount of dechlorinator in a bucket of water and poured in tank. As my tank is far too big for this now im going to have to change my method and add from a hose. Ive had mixed reviews on adding dechlorinator tho some say use enough for water added to tank and some say for the whole tank capasity. Which is correct?

I use prime and when doing water changes on my large tank, I always add the amount equal to the entire tank capacity.

X2, i do this just to be on the safeside. If you call your local water company, you can find out the concentration of chlorine or chloramine in the water and use the appropriate amount.

Hmmm wow...IDK whats right or wrong, but I think it all depends on the sensitivity of the types of fishes you're keeping. Most cichlids are hardy enough to where you don't even have to use dechlorinators.

Oh forgot....Also the area where you live, the contents of the water can be different too. A lot of factors I guess but here in Fresno, CA our water is pretty chlorinated, I mean you can almost smell it, but hell I drink it. Whatever, Whatever, LOL....thats what I always say.

My experience is that what is worst is Nitrate/Nitrite levels...also don't fluctuate in pH and temp.

I use Safe and always treat the entire volume of the tank as well, but it's so cheap I have no problem using a little extra. I bought an $8 jar over a year ago and still have over half left after treating 110G every week.

+1

But I treat for water added, especially with the smell of prime, that stuff can't be good in high volumes. But here's my little trick, I don't ADD all of the dechlor at once, I do 50% wc, so I add 1/2 the amount when I turn on the hose, and the rest when its at halfway, it has worked very well, and I save a little cash. It all depends on how much product your water company adds.

And when I do changes on small tanks, I take a cue tip and dip it in the bottle of prime and toss in bucket, way to hard to pour 2 drops lol.

I always do the volume of the whole tank. I put it in before I turn on the python and fill it back and after 30+ years of doing it that way, have never had a problem. Now having bad city water, especially down here in florida, is a whole different story.

I have a reservoir, and add prime to my reservoir. I let it sit with powerheads turning the water around and the next day the temp is good to go. Then I can just add water out of the reservoir to my tanks after doing a water change. It really has made life simpler but not everybody has room for a reservoir.

If you let it sit for a day you don't need any dechlor, maybe just 1/4 dose it for heavy metals etc.

Cool idea tho.
