Decided on mainly Malawi Predator Haps please help me add to list

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree in adding a rostratus, here's mine from an all male set up I had several years back. You can see one of the P. "Phenochilus Tanzania" I had in the background. (I had 2 male phenochilus in this tank)

Crappy $50 point and shoot camera, but good enough to show how nice rostratus males start to look as they mature.

My all male African tank seemed to go through changes over the years, some fish being removed, some being added. It was a constant work in progress.

Good luck with your new set up!

Thanks, beautiful fish. Rostratus and rhoadesii are my two favorite Malawi's I think...I don't know it changes. I thought of keeping a "big mouth" hap too...but they get really big from what I have read.

One of the toughest no nonsense predatory haps that I kept in my all male tank - Stigmatochromis modestus. The photo is really flash washed out, and really doesn't do him justice.

I was recommended one of these by billy at cichlid express a while ago. I really wish I would have goy it now.

This is going back over a decade, but at that time I had never seen one before. His colors reminded me of an Iodotropheus sprengerae, unfortunately my camera didn't capture that.

Here's going to be the final list for now unless you think I can add to it.
Already in the tank and fairly mature:
D. Strigatus
C. Azureus
N. Venustus
Plac. Milomo
Prot. Spilonotus "Tanzania"
Prot. Taeniolotus "Tangerine Tiger"
A. Baenschi
A. Lwanda
A. Jake "Eureka"

Bottom already in tank:
Synodontis Ocillier 7-8inch
Synodontis Notatus 4 inch

Would like to add a Synodontis Decorus...or Angelicus

On hold Males that I'll be recieving

Buccochromis Nototaenia 4-5inch
Chilotilapia Rhoadesii 4-5inch
Tyrannochromis nigriventer 4-5inch
Aristochromis christy 4-5inch
Champsochromis caeruleus 5 inch
Fossorochromis rostratus 5 inch

These fish on hold are significantly smaller than the mature fish above; howver, some of them get huge like the Champ, Rostratus, Bucco Noto, Tyrannochromis, and even Rhoadesii can get a foot sometimes.
So with the 15 Haps I will have in the tank wouldn't it be maxed or would you add more? Somebody stated 20, but some of those fish get fairly big 14-18inches...I am sure it takes a while, but still.

IMHO once mature, you will be full, and then some. Hopefully after growing out together they all play nice.
