black diamond is used for sand blasting it is pure silica, non reactive, smooth, and best of all super cheap. Basically it is a very cheap substrate alternative that comes in several sizes another great one is pool filter sand

I was wrong about it being pure silica, I was going by memory, it's actually coal slag but the rest is right. You can get it at northern tool for cheap too. You can even get it from amazon but it's $40 with shipping. The one thing about adding it to water is that some will float and you will have to skim it off the top
