what i would do is buy live potted plants, then get some nice driftwood pieces and angle the pots behind the driftwood so that you can see the plants, but not the pots. plus it will give some depth to the tank as you look at it.

That is a good idea, never thought of it. For the plant substrate you could use flourite or eco-complete in the pots.

you can do partial gravel and leave the rest bb. i have one big dw on a slate and i covered the slate with gravel in a circular shape. easy to clean just that patch of gravel. i dont know how to show the pic but i can post one in a separate post to show you.
