Decorative Plecos and Planted Tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmm- are those rainbow fish in the tank? Is you water more hard and alkaline, or soft and acidic. If the latter, the starlights will be fine, but I worry they won't do well in hard/alkaline water that the rainbows like. An alternative would be some line-bred bristlenose pleco, like an albino bn or some longfin bn (below are some link on aquabid to albino and "red" bn).
Another option may be L204 or flash pleco; they supposedly can do ok in slightly alkaline/hard water.
I think L52 (butterly) may be plant safe, but I'm not sure how it will do in slightly alkaline/hard water.

Not to bad and nowhere near as expensive as a zebra. easy to breed too if your into that. I think Jeff Rapps has them on his list now.

Now a question for you . I noticed the Marble Motoro in your avatar. I was thinking of getting one myself how do your discus handle him in there tank?

I absolutely love my Marbled and he has been housed with my Discus for over 2 years now with no issues at all.....I find that FW Rays have such personalities and my guy even eagerly eats shrimp from my hand (I know that this is not recommended, but I am happy to take the risk for the additional interaction with the Ray). The only time I see a bit of interaction between the Discus and Ray is when I feed the Ray market shrimp and the small shredded pieces start to float as he feeds. If the Discus are faster than the 3 x clown loaches, they will eagerly eat the small pieces of shrimp. Many people feel that both Discus and FW Stingrays should be in a species-only set-up, but I find that they complement each other nicely and share very similar water parameters. Here is a recent pic of the 260-gallon, unfortunately the Marbled was buried under the sand on the left side of the tank (near driftwood). I'll try to get a better shot with him cruising around and post later......

Nice...they are really beautiful. Are they very active during the day (lights on)? Will I only be able to enjoy them under the LED simulated moonlight at night? :) Have you had any luck breeding them?

Thanks for the additional info. The water in my planted tank is a bit more hard and alkaline. I am starting my research on possible options and will take a look at your suggestions. I've had great luck with the Bristlenose Plecos and just looking for something a bit more decorative/flashy. :)
