Yeah a 12" diameter should be fine. Because think about if you did the whole surface. Your not gonna get everything to the same level. IMO i think there would be more distortion if you did the whole thing rather than just that small area. And yeah a slight distortion that, more than likely, you'll be the only one to notice rather than a deep scratch that everyone is gonna see. Good luck

All I have is a 6" x 6" sander, this sander is a vibrating sander.

The palm sander is gonna save you alot of work. Id use this at first but when you get to the 1200 and 3000 grit that should be by hand.
