deep water hap?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also bought one from the same petsmart hoping it was a deepwater hap but it died .In person once it settled in my tank it looked more like moori, Mine had no black on the fins and dark blue blocthes down its side like moori .It should also be noted the tank these came out of is labeled "cyrtocara electra" which to my knowledge only the blue dolphin is in the cyrtocara family and a deep water hap is a placidochromis family.

I do believe that the deep water hap used to be called crytocara electra, and petsmart doesn't usually update their scientific names very quickly at all.

Also, I looked closely at my deep water hap juvies and moori juvies (sorry they won't sit still for a good pic) and noticed that the moories also a have a line through the eye like the haps, it just isn't as dark. So maybe what you have are mooris, I don't know. I guess you'll know more in a few weeks/months.

Looks more like moorii and deep water haps are haplochromis and that is what all haps use to be. I do not recall the haplochromis electra being anything else. The moorii do have the eye stripe and the black botches are not out always. When younger the block spots are not as noticeable once they get a little larger the block splotches come out more until the males are of breeding size. Females will often keep the spots.

they look like young dolphins even without the blotches as i have had some fry without them
also the white substrate will be drawing the colour out of the fish. u mite find that if u put them in a tank with darker substrait they will get there darker marking / this is a defencive thing trying to blend in with there suroundings
i do not think they are electra this is what a young electra looks like

as u can see they dont look anything alike

hmmm...yeah for sure look different....i wonder if they are hybrids or something....i guess ill have to wait till they get bigger and see...thanks for the pic and the info

I have seen them at psmart, and they definitely are dolphins.kinda pissed me off.I already breed them anyway.Seems to be a habit at petsmart.Last week they were selling flowerhorns and calling them redtexas.
