Ok so my husband and I previously owned a Fahaka Puffer. It died and we were planning on getting a Mbu puffer but some how ended up coming home with a 5 inch Fahaka lol. This puffer however does not seem to like us. He just stays buried or in his fake tree trunk thing. We have had him for 2 weeks. He eats that is not a problem but does not do anything else. We put a few African cichlids in with him thinking maybe he will come out of his shell if he had some type of entertainment but nothing. The cichlids are 2 inches so that they could not hurt him. Our last puffer from the moment we brought it home was active and silly. It was always happy to see us and against my wishes would let my 3 year old pet it. He would even chase my sons hot wheels as he drove them along the tank stand. This one is just.....blah. Could it need more time to warm up to his new home and to us????

Could be a host of reasons...

1) still settling in

2) tank may or may not have enough decor

3) tank size

4) water parameters etc...

5) stressed...

He is in a 75 gal

This is what it looked like just prior to placing him in it. I have since then added some more drift wood and his little fake tree trunk that he really seems to like.

I take it you puffer is still small? Anyway... As long as hes still eating and not looking skinny soon after a big meal id let him settle for a bit...

I agree. Keep the water clean and feed him well and he will come out of his shell on his own.

im going to be honest i dont know anything about puffers BUT i know that african cichlids are evil even when small they have killed and tortured other fish within minutes i dont trust them with anything maybe try and take them out and see what happens but thats just my opinion good luck to you

Well, you can try separating them , but considering fahakas when full grown will reach about 17-18" fish and grow pretty quick i think he should be able to hold his own...

I have a single yellow lab chiclid live with my 13" female and they are okay... Although i'll be honest and say the yellow lab got a nasty bite when he tried to nip my fahaka... But has healed up completely and now are best friends...

Well mine puffer is about 6 inches and he is in with 1 inch yellow tail acie and they do not seem to care about him at all but yes they are evil little monsters. They are only temporary room mates though. Once they are a little bigger they are going to be sold. We will how ever be putting about 4 cichlids with him or some tropical fish.

Anyways he is eating good and swimming around more. He seems to like the dwarf giraffe cat that is in there. They are a strange combo to see laying side by side.

Cute little Fahaka! Lol! Seriously though it's just that all fish are individuals and some will not necessarily fit in the norm and some will just take longer to warm up as you suggested yourself. Can I ask though do you plan on keeping him alone as he get's bigger? I'm just curious because I've never tried comm'ing a puffer as I was under the impression they don't comm. well. Meaning they snap any tankmates in half. I've kept puffers myself, Fahaka and Congo's but always kept them by themselves. I was always too worried about my other stock to risk it.

Our lil' guy was pretty reclusive himself.. once he knew we had the food it was hard NOT to get his attention when in the room. Give him some time and he'll liekly be as sassy as your last one. GL, and he's a cutie.
