Definition of FlowerHorn

In my opinion a flower horn is determined more by its look then what went into it 20 years ago to give it its foundational look. Google ZZ Red Dragon, Kamalau, Kamfa and you will notice how they look. Even though FHs are hybrids, they have taken on a certain line, so to speak. I think fish can only breed with other fish in their genus. I have heard rumors of crossbreeding oscars as well, but I'm no marine biologist. The Wiki definition is loose and vague. I think it’s a great definition for your average Joe… but as a dedicated Cichlid hobbyist I need a little more… This is not a clear, concise definition…

I understand that we do not know exactly what the original FlowerHorns were made from, and that’s fine… I also understand that not all FlowrHorns are made up of the same list of species, again, fine… but my question remains… what is the commonly accepted definition of a FlowerHorn? If your not sure what I mean by a definition then look up the word definition in the dictionary… it will give you it’s definition…

I’m not asking this to flame the FlowerHorns, as I don’t have anything harsh to say about the fish. I’m just saying if the word has no meaning… well that just doesn’t make sense… words have meanings… that is a significant part of the definition of the word, “word”.

Let me ask from this angle…

I have a Border Collie… Border Collies did not naturally evolve nor were they created by God (whichever perspective you support), instead they are the result of manmade hybridization. Then at some point it was decided (again, by man) to make it a species. But to do so they had to give the potential new species a definition… or to describe the species…

What would be the FlowerHorn equivalent to a species or genus description…

That’s easy… so is it safe to say that a FlowerHorn needs to have the “flower” markings down it’s side as well as a kok… understanding that the extent of each will vary in individual fish, but these features should be prominent in the species cross…

If this is a solid part of it’s definition or description am I correct to understand that since Super Red Texas (and several other named hybrids) are not FlowerHorns due to the lack of Flower markings?

a super red texas isn't considered as a FH they are grouped under the fortune fish along with the JK FHs, flame FHs and many more which are flowerless too

So are there FlowerHorns that have Flowers & a kok that do not have any Trimac in them?

yup there could be
i think the red monkey would qualify as one such FH

no not all flowerhorns have flowers. you asked for a definition of the word flowerhorn. i was relating it to the fish type in question. a slightly trained eye can spot a flowerhorn right of the bat. google flowerhorn or search this hybrid forum for flowerhorn if you need photos to show you what they are. and how they vary is colors and structure of other cichlids.
