If you live anywhere near San Francisco, I know of a couple places where to get them. My del cost $20 at 2 inches. He still has his external gills on one side but the other side probably was nipped by the other fishes at the LFS before I got him.

I got my del at Aquatraders in San Bruno. Their phone number is 650-872-1993. I've tried calling them before but I always seem to get a busy signal so I'm not sure if it works. They're located 5 min. from SF airport and so the fishes here a pretty cheap.

The other one is http://www.6thaveaquarium.net/. I'm not sure how much the del here cost since they didn't have a price when I went there yesterday.

I don't think either places ship fish but you can always try and ask. It would be best if you came in and choose your fish instead since sometimes the conditions of some of the tanks are a bit questionable.

There is no way to prevent the lost of external gills from bichirs so far...It is just a matter of time.

However, some ppl do reduce the aeration in the tank to kinda starve the bichir of oxygen to prevent the bichir's ext gills from disapperaring as long as can be.
