Hello I am looking to get a Del for my 125 soon and was wondering if anyone who has kept bichirs could answer some questions
I know the basics size diet tank mates
1. treats what would you feed them as treats for variation?
2. Are their any diseases they are prone too?
3. Growth rate
4. How active are they?
5. is their anything else I should know about them?

For the first 6 months to a year or more most bichir species grow incredibly fast. As they age they will slowly start to grow slower. Since they have poor eyesight they are more active at night. For food and variation in their diets I recommend feeding frozen bloodworms when they are younger and cubes of brine shrimp. For a treat, I feed my small gray bichir small pieces of a frozen tilapia filet that I buy at the grocery store.
There aren’t any diseases that are specific to bichir that you need to worry about. Instead, the standard culprits like Ich are what you need to keep an out for. The good thing is that providing great bichir care and keeping the water and tank in great condition will significantly reduce the chances of your fish getting sick. Have fun and have an awesome day! ;) BTW could you send a pic or 2 of the bichir?

Check out Rachel O'leary and her video's on bichirs. She has the saddled bichir but still gives a great overview of the fish.

I have three and these guys will eat literally anything i put in the tank. Tilapia, shrimp, night crawlers, blood worms, massivore... truly anything haha. Perfect temperament too they get along with each other great. Whenever i come home they are always piled up on top of each other. They grew to around 8" in the first 8 months but have significantly dropped off in growth rate since hitting that mark. Like MonsterMike said they are much more active at night, but are fun fish to watch.
