Demasoni: Agressive or not??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He was too big for them to eat. They may be adult oscars but he wouldn't fit in their mouths. They just gnawed on him a little too much. That or the Red Zebra killed him. He gets along great with the Oscars

They are aggressive with each other not really other species. They are best kept in large groups (suggested stocking is at least 12 but this is a rule of thumb) vs 3 or 4. It could be as with other species that as they are bred more and more in captivity they might lose this aggression and the rule of thumb will no longer apply. I have one pair in a 125 gallon and they produce regularly with no aggression seen between the 2.

I would say that these guy can get really agressiove towards each other, but I'm not sure if I would say that they are any more agressive that any other mbuna.

i think it is all the mixture of fish and size of tank and ratio of males to females that makes a fish aggressive or not.. yellow labs are sweet but put them with an even less aggressive fish and they will chase and bully... so its just how they all mix and match that makes the difference i think for the most part.

:iagree: It depends on individual fishes and the environment that you provide them with.

Although, IME they are aggressive. I knew about their bad rep before and thats why I added the demasoni last, but the little fella still terrorized my tank.

My demasoni colony looks great and has had no problems. There are several ways I have heard to be sucessful with them.
one is a big tank,75g or bigger.Mine are in 125g
two, yellow labs.having them around seems to calm the demasoni.3m 10f labs in my tank
three, multiple males and more females than males.Spreads the aggression4m12f demasoni in mine
four, the dominant male fish in the tank should not be the demasoni. In my tank the lab.trewavase rules the roost.

Not saying this is the only way to go about it but its a good way to stack the deck in your favor.

Nice info Gomez. I have albino yellow labs in my tank with the demasoni as well as 2 afra Cobue and one Lemon Jake.
