My BG/GG Demsey fry are finally free swimming.Took over a week since eggs were laid.I guess thats normal.I am leaving parents in with fry,at least for a few weeks. They are in a 46 gallon tank by themselves.Anyone else have any experiences with leaving Dempsey parents in with their fry?

I bred Dempsey's years ago. Most Cichlids are pretty good parents. You could leave them with parents until it gets so crowded your kinda forced to separate them. Its easier to raise the fry with the parents. If you remove them now your going to create a lot more work keeping the fry tank water clean. Plus your pair will probably spawn again then you'll really crammed with fish!

You are right, the parents are really taking care of their fry.The flake food or cichlid crisps I feed the parents is chewed then they spit it in the direction of their fry.I am also feeding the fry decapsulated brine shrimp.I dont think I have lost any fry yet. There has to be a couple of hundred of fry in the tank.Think I'll give it 2 more weeks, then should I take the fry out or remove the parents?I could put the parents in a 90 gallon tank I have with 4 other Dempseys.Or should I put the fry in a 20 gallon tank I have set up?

I understand the 20 gallon would only be very temporary.I can set up a 55 gallon tank in the next month or so.They are in a 46 gallon bow tank right now with the parents.I guess whatever tank I put the fry in would have to match as much as possible the water parameters of the 46 gallon.

Cichlids make excellent parents. I leave them in until i notice aggression.

i agree :)

If you are leaving the fry with the parents you may not end up with very many electric blue or blue/gold left.

Are you saying the parents will eat the Ebjd and Blue/Golds,and leave the other fry alone?I have read that the siblings will eat the Blues if you don't separate after a month or so.How long would you suggest leaving the parents with the fry?And when should the fry be separated from each other?
