Dempsey fry are free swimming

You will have a better chance of having a higher yield of your desired color morphs if seperated from the parents. It has been said that the adult fish will eat the blue fish.

The regular type jds from the spawn may out compete the blue/golds or what have you for food. You should be able to tell them apart by 3 weeks for sure. Remove the blues and blue golds and use the rest (reg jd, blue gene, gold gene) as feeders.

*When I left my BGXBG spawn with the parents I only got regular amd blue genes I saw a few ebjd here and there but they would be about half the size of the other siblings. The rest of the fry single out the EBJD and will pick on them and batter them when they try to feed. Also it's extremely hard to separate fry while there in am aquarium with the parents theres more room and you just can't pick out ebjd from the rest. Now if you remove the fry right away and raise them together you soon will notice the bright gold colored ones and then can separate the rest of the fry from them. Another trick I learned over the past few spawns is put them in the smallest container as possible right after they become free swimming, frequent water changes are a must but you A) Can keep a close eye on them. B) Control temp amd water perms much easier. And C) Feed easier. If you live somewhere warm set up a bucket with a net out side and fill it with water, then let it sit in the sun. You will attract mosquito larvae that make great foods for young fry and I mean it. Also when removing the fry and separating blues from regulars still save all the regular fry in another container, you'd be surprised at how many blues develop a little later, but you'll also get some nice JD, if you don't want any regular jacks at all within a few weeks of them being free swimming you'll know which ones are for sure regular Dempsey and you can remove them at this point as well. EBJD are much slower growing then there brother and sisters, in the aquarium almost 99% of BGJD spawns will yield all regular fry if left in the parents care.

Right now they are all in the 20 gallon tank by themselves. Most look like reg JD or could be BGJD.Some look a little lighter in color with thin lines on them, some look all white(or gold).Largest ones look regular. They have been by themselves for over a week,no problems so far. They are still small, largest ones are maybe 1/4 of an inch. Was thinking about getting a tank divider for the 20 gallon to seperate the lighter colored ones from the rest.
