I was hoping I could get a gender ID on a couple of recent purchases. I know nothing about sexing cichlids so any help would be great. They may be too young yet to tell, but here goes. Oh yeah, please excuse the dirty glass and ugly tank, they are in quarantine.

Well I'm saying that is a Male Although it does look Felamish. I'd will say it is a Male

Is it color that determines it or a morphological thing? I was hoping to get a hold of a female to get my EBJD into breeding colors. I was told having some others to be dominant over would help as well so I didn't mind if these were males but a female was my best case scenario.

Hmmmm,we would guess both females. We had the same idea to put a regular jd female with our ebjd male.We have found that females have the blue color under there eye, down to there gill more intensely then a male and seem to be darker as well.

With this logic, which would be the same I applied when giving my opinion, would point to two males since both those fish lack the metallic blue patches on the lower gillplate that females have. Males may have only small blue speckles that go into the lower gillplate, if any, since this area is usually pink on them.
I was able to sex my JD's at 2" using these methods. But it's still not always accurate. Some may take more time to develop proper color so to be 100% sure I'd give it just a little more time. :)

Too young I say.

Might be wrong tho...
