Dempsey only tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The beauty of attempting this is they are fairly common so with little effort you could probably ensure most are Un related and create some nice strong genes in the young....
Subbed, looking forward to this setup. Can't beat the old faithful cichlids sometimes!-)

Another idea, you could do a smaller number of JDs and then have a decent sized group of Rainbow cichlids with them. They are both species from Honduras, and you could also add Green Swordtails if you'd like! Now that I am convinced mine will never get above 4-5 inches I decided just to put him in my 38g Honduran biotope with my Rainbow cichlids and Green Swordtails. You could do a bigger version of that idea... A school od Swordtails at the top, a colony of Rainbow cichlids and few JDs mixed in! Look at some of Lee Nutall's tanks on YouTube if you'd like some inspiration!
Your Jd only grew to 5"? He's a little guy.

I'm excited to see this tank too. After seeing stanz green terror tank I've been more convinced to keep a large group of the same species together.

They are so common I think people forget how beautiful they are. If they weren't so common everyone would want to keep them

+1 a nice regular jd is nicer than ebjd Imo, they look awesome when big. Biggest hold back is growth, so so slow.

Actually he is less than 5" - maybe only 3.5" ... I don't think he will ever get beyond 4-5". And as I said he has been living in a 160g tank with a 45g sump, for over a year so stunting since he had been with me is not the problem. Either it is his genetics (he's half EBJD) or he was permanently stunted prior to me getting him. I got him hoping to put him in the 700g tank I'm building, but I don't think he will ever be big enough to not get eaten.

I keep sail fin mollies in with the JDs.... helps with the shyness.

Unfortunately, the mollies don't fare very well when the JDs spawn, I usually move them when I see eggs.
