Dempsey's wont grow

Im going to suggest that Jack dempseys are slow growers and they may have grown slightly but you cant see the difference because you see them everyday. Its hard to notice a fish growing unless u actually measure it in time intervals. Try to put something in the tank that you are aware of its size and compare them to that .

Could they be stunted if this is not the case?

If anything they have gotten a little wider since Ive had then, and have gotten "healthier" looking, but they really haven't gotten any longer, if they have i would say it was less than a 1/4", and as far as water changer, I change like a 1/8 of the water every week, but like I said the water chemistry is near perfect on my tank, so I don't think that has anything to do with it

and as far as a fish being stunted what do you mean by that, how can you stunt a fish's growth

and for food I feed them Hikari Cichlid staple, and they eat, not like my oscars, but they do, I also feed them brine shrimp, and blood worms occasionally, I personally think they look pretty healthy so yeah i don't know whats up with them, perhaps Ive stumbled upon a midget dempsey

I have a male that hasn't grown more than 2" in about 1 year.

He bred with the female in less than a month and the fry got to free swimming then disappeared; he hasn't stopped harassing the female for more eggs since.

Basically, I believe he is constantly in spawn mode, which, from what I have heard, cuts down the amount they eat. He has even been in dark spawning colors since i got him.

My female on the other hand is non-spawning colors and has grown closer to 4".

Try earthworms mine love them and the high protein should help!

Hope this gives you some useful information towards solving your problem if not you could always try milk :)

I bought 6 blue gene Jack Dempsey's that ranged from a half inch to just a bit over an inch 1 year ago February 6th of last year. Out of those 6 I only lost 1, but the male is about 7-8"s and the 2 females are about 5"s. Yours were probably stunted, which explains them not growing.

I got 5x 2" JDs in March last year, two of them grew in excess of 2 inches in the next 2 months, and the rest only grew less than an inch.

The two fastest growing cichlids happened to be male and female and they formed a mated pair in May and bred immediately, almost killing the rest. So I'd say they all have different growing rates/better genes/etc.

Sadly my female died after they mated twice but the male grew to around 6 inches by December.
