Denticles??

Hi all my 16inch female motoro as started getting denticles and lots. So can anybody awnser these questions for me

1, Do they harm the ray
2, what causes them
3, Do they fall off

My females have them too along their spine & tail. Its normal I think. The male doesnt really have that much, but noticed that my female had substantially more.

My old motoro female had them, I think its kind of a maturity thing. She also got them where my male would bite her when he wanted to mate with her.... could be part of a defense.

Every ray is covered by denticles, they're just too small to see, but they're easy to feel. Im thinking these bigger denticles just grow as the ray matures. It's just part of the skin. I don't think it falls off though.

Yepp, basically like rose thorns.

My female half marble even has small denticles on the underside of her tail, just opposite of
the spine.

Right where the males like to bite them to flip them over ??? Mine too

Actually the term "denticle" means tooth. Rays and sharks are known for their "toothed" skin/scales. -FM
