I do love my fish, but I hate seeing my angel slam herself into the glass whenever I walk up to feed the tank. If it takes me any less than 30 seconds to walk past my 55, she freaks out and slams into the glass repeatedly in an effort to escape from me. She only eats if I dump food in, shut off ALL lights and leave quickly and quietly. I'm going to try to get another angel this weekend. Hopefully I can have it out of my QT before the other kills itself.

if your that worried about your angel killing itself before you can safely QT a new angel, add your existing one to the QT tank. while it may be a risk for disease, which you can usually cure, the fish could also end up killing itself by slamming into the glass if its as bad as your saying

Do a large water change. Thats what it sounds like---poor water quality. Never heard or seen any of my fish carry emotional bonds--they aren't that complex.

I do water changes about twice a week. I have all water params at 0, with the exception of nitrate, which hovers around 15 ppm. My water is not an issue.

The whole fishkeeping hobby has already been complex.;) I sometimes think maybe we're just being naive but has anyone ever observed how most fish seem to be "happy" when kept with their company rather than in solitary confinement?

I noticed a complete change in my angel's behavior when I bought its mate. I kept her as the only angel in my tank for about 3 years, then my girlfriend talked me into buying another angel. Literally, the moment I put the new angel in the tank, they swam right towards each other and were inseparable after meeting. My old angel became more active and outgoing when I paired her up. I do agree with your statement, they definitely seem happier when with their own kind.
