Yeah fishkeeping keeps me sane too I also have Autism. I used to smoke pot to keep myself happy but it did no good now I spend most of my money on fish and it keeps me happy enough:)

I am glad you chose a productive hobby instead of a destructive one.

I have depression pretty bad. Always have and went with out medication since I was 17yrs old and now 31yrs old. I had people suggest and suggest for me to get on meds they saw a deeper depression then I had. I thought I was okay.

I went back on meds about 6mo ago and now I am not sure how I functioned! I had awful insomnia but having my daughter cured that pretty much.

Fish keeping has helped me too. These little fish have become something more and they are amazing. I have to stop and watch them and take the time to enjoy them to get to know them. They are so fragile and they depend on me to keep my crap together and my devotion to help them alive. It is a huge task and the best part? I know a lot more today then I did a year ago when I started, but I still dont know a whole lot compared to what there is to know. This means I AM NOT BORED!

It is soothing and they are an amazing part of our worlds that we put in glass cages to really see and be apart of.

its good that fishkeeping and MFK helps you out Bruce and all the others who have posted in this thread.
i'm glad that MFK with its members and staff and the hobby as a whole can make a difference to peoples lives.
hopefully MFK and the forum you set up will keep your spirits up.

Thank you DiXon good words.

i think it helps everyone emotionally and mentally to have such a rewarding hobby. when you take care of your fish, they really seem to appreciate it and you are rewarded by a vibrant, healthy looking fish. and on the occasion that they deteriorate, they depend on your help and guidance to pull them through. it's good to feel needed.

as if life isn't hard enough on its own, i'm glad that those of us with additional struggles can find something to inspire them and remind them daily that they are loved, needed, and appreciated.

I have depression myself, and I find that keeping pets help, especially if they're really interesting pets. I know that my gecko and chinchilla always brighten up my day when I see them. This is one reason I'm going to start up my own tank at college.

And if you can get them to breed too.
