Yeah I'm confused on the whole by-products issue. I saw mentioned Heterotrophic (Carbon Based) denitrification can generate sulfur byproducts if the dosage is wrong on your carbon supplement, and I also noticed that CO2 is one of the major byproducts of the autotrophic (sulfur based) process. Still scratching my head on that.

As for replacing the sulfur, most of the articles I've read suggest the sulfur consumption rate is very low, although the reaction I have here suggests that you'd consume 1g of sulfur per 4g of nitrate... so maybe I've got something wrong in my chemistry. Adding a kg of sulfur every 4 days might not be that practical for you!

i think sized right it would be twice a year :)

ummm people dont need to do water changes if they dont have fish or they have de-nitrators. the problem is down the track nutrients are used up and the water although not toxic runs out of theese necassery nutrients and thats when water changes are needed

Or the analyzer could just tell the computer to add the trace elements (you add nutrients when you feed).

Not sure I buy that... I was reading that on one guys public aquarium denitration project the tank went years without a water change. It would be very difficult to come close to this kind of bio-complete system, and periodic water changes will always be a good idea in any kind of home installation... even trace elements and toxins - the ones you don't typically worry about - will build up over time as you top up evaporated water. As someone else said though, with a sophisticated enoug system, the 'holy grail' should be an entirely self sufficient system, with only oxygen and food going out, and denitration byproducts coming out.

Great thread. I've certainly thought of building a filter incorporating some of these elements but have yet to have enough space. One of the things I'm looking forward to most about one day getting a monster tank is building the filtration system.

I think the best way to incorporate a "bakki-like" tower into the home aquarium setup is to have it start right at the top of the overflow and run all the way down to the floor beside the aquarium. As I understand it, height is the key thing with these systems and a setup like this would give you 5-6' of height to work with on a typical large aquarium. The whole thing could be housed inside an acrylic/glass case with sliding doors for maintence access, which would sit on top of the sump tank. This, in turn, could be enclosed in cabinet between the stand and canopy, which would help to reduce noise and prevent it from being an eyesore.

I included a really rough sketch that I threw together in MS paint just to give you an idea of what I'm suggesting.

It also seems to me that the planted sump and DSB could be combined into one - a planted DSB. The use of emerse plants would be critical so as not to depend on dissolved CO2.

This brings us to a key problem with the whole system. As I see it, it would be practically impossible to house aquatic plants in the aquarium when using a system like this. The W/D shower part would effectively strip CO2 from the water, and the planted sump and DSB would reduce NO2, thereby depriving aquarium plants of critical requirements. That being said, it seems like this would work well on a monster fish only setup.

Alright. That's it. I'm gonna build a sulfur denitrator for my 200gal and see if I can make it work. Anyone got a good idea where I can get sulfur pellets? (and not marinedepot... sulfur shouldn't cost $20/gal)

marine depot might be cheaper for small quanties
