you very likely have a Florida gar, spotted gars are generally not available in the hobby via LFS. the common LFS gars are usually called alligator gars or spotted gars based on poor ID info that the LFS receives, makes up, and/or perpetuates themselves--

PS-- if you post a pic, we can ID the fish for you.
PPS-- keep in mind gars of all species are illegal in california.

i know >< but i trust none of u to tell on meh!

im pretty sure its a spotted it lookes just like the one in the post about short body gars lol
but longert and more spots

also i know alot of ppl have fish that are illigal here why is it so much concern that it be pointed out?
i could see if i where selling it as that makes this forum look bad by lettting that happen (wich it dosnt) but the lfs sold me it and i got it already lol just wondering =D

i sound like an echo here, but it's because of mentalities and posts like this that encourage others to jump on board the "illegal ship". this in turn leads to proposed laws like HR669. also, if there are no buyers, there can be no sellers. if you buy this fish, YOU encourage the lfs to import even more illegal/invasive species.

I have a lfs in california that has gars "on sale" for $65...

I didn't know they were illegal here tho. thats my own ignorance tho.

you don't have a spotted gar, trust me. it's possible, but judging from the info in your posts, i highly doubt it. plus, you're trying to ID a spotted vs Florida gar based on the image of a genetic anomaly.

your comments on illegal fishes have already been responded to by xander (and indirectly by me in other threads, given what he said). and yes, i do feel it needs to be pointed out relatively frequently, in many cases it's the only way others will find out which fishes are illegal to keep and which are not.--
