determining needed fly line weight?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ah i gotcha there. cuz i had a tapered leader on there but it got tangled, so my poppers would sink, but my friend also suggested just using some lightweight mono line for the leader. i actually bought the rod as a kit at walmart, came with a few flys, but i think its a pretty nice setup, especially for its price, i had a few poppers but didnt know how to use them with regular mono line, but then they came in handy. ill probably be buying some new line for it around xmas, along with a fly rod case for it so i can keep it in my car along with a few other rods.

Don't just attach monofilament as a leader. The fly won't turn over and you'll get frustrated.

The leader needs to taper from a thicker diameter to the thinnest to which you attach the fly.

Purchase a 9' trout leader that ends at 3-4 lb test. Also purchase a small spool of flourocarbon tippet that is 3 lbs.

Attach a 12-15" inch section of tippet to the end of your leader. Then attach the fly. Get on the web and make sure you are using the proper knots. It is one of the more difficult things to learn about flyfishing.

if the rod takes 5-6 flyline....Purchase 6 weight floating. It will load the rod better for short casts.

purchase some floatent for your flys and the front foot of your flyline.

Good luck.
