detritus eater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cucs are not for beginners. Not to say that you cant have one, but to warn you first, they can die easily, and when they do it is similar to an anemone "nuking" your tank...not good, major emergency.

Peppermint shrimp are cool for eating aptasia, but watch out, because they will pick at larger nems, and they will eat acans. (In fact, they love them.)

Fleshy- I like that you made sure to give the warning... Just to clear it up though, just cuz I'm new to this site doesn't mean I'm new to the hobby, but I appreciate the full spectrum of info. And I want you to know, with the exception of a wrasse that the girlfriend surprised me with, I make sure to research anything I consider buying before I buy it.
And as promised....

Interesting on the Peppermints....I was unaware of them enjoying acans. Haven't noticed them eating mine at all yet, but I will be on the lookout for that.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but that is quite the stocklist you have on your 210. I can't believe the groupers haven't killed each other. Or that the Clown trigger hasn't killed everyone. You must be doing some frequent water changes or have some amazing filtration. I would love to see a pic of that tank for sure!

peppermints are hit or miss on larger stuff. I think there are a lot of subspecies in the trade currently called "peppermints" I've heard people talk about them eating any number of LPS corals, but I've never had the problem.

Cukes are cool, but not very workable long term in reef settings. (they seem to have a magnetic attraction to things that will sting them badly and powerheads intakes...)

truth be told... the stock list is bigger than I intended on the 210, I had the white spot grouper in a different tank that took a poop on me so he had to go in their, luckily he's bigger than the miniatus... they fight a little bit but for now it's working out until I build a bigger tank and the panther grouper could care less about either of them, I was in the process of setting up a 120 reef and was planning on moving the tomato clown and rabbit fish to that, but now we're about to move so that got nixed, and the emperor snapper was a rescue from a pet store that was tired of feeding him... they were actually intentionally feeding him huge feeder goldfish to try and choke him... so I brought him home. and yeah the clown trigger is a jerk... I lost a majestic angel in less than 24 hours because of him...
but to get back on track... with the brittles, I know there is a green one that can wipe out a tank "the green terror" I think is what it's called. Are there green ones that are fine, is there a tell tale way to ID them from the bad ones, or should the green ones just be avoided?

This may be the reason yours arent opening up. I never thought about this...that was the fate of my first acan as well. I started watching the shrimp at night with the moonlights, and sure enough...acan feast.

Yea, same as having an anemone go, and letting it sit there in the critical "Jello" phase. :grinno:

I don't think this is the case actually, because my other acan which is about 4 inches from this one is fully open and doing very well. Also, the one not opening has no signs of physical trama. I will be on the lookout at night however to see whats happening.

I still have to try to catch that mantis or whatever I have too. Still beating the crap out of the damsel in there. I want the 2 damsels out anyway, I don't know why I ever put them in there.
