I am sorry to hear this, I lost one a few years back; it is quite upsetting.

I think they move across land in the wild to find mates or food / new water.

I glued egg grate over all the openings where filter pipes come in and I weigh down the cover glass with bags full of gravel. If there is ever any gap they will eventually get out.

Sorry for your loss :(

They are such great characters and it hurts to lose one. They're mostly just slippery muscle though so easy to see how they can push their way out of things.

We had two and lost our favourite one after a house move. We'd forgotten to tape the corner holes back up and he got out. He was our favourite cos he used to be a lot more active.
