hi guys

here it gows.........One of my first fish was a red devil, i got her as a juvi, when i bought her i was reasonably young and didnt know anything about her, however the pet store manager assured me that she would do well in my 55g community..... well she did for a while until she became a bit more aggressive that is so after doing some research i managed to pick up a 220g tank and over the years have built up an impressive collection of cichlids and oddballs with her, however she has been giving allot of trouble to my jag recently so i purchased a smaller 170g tank for her . I then moved her back with the jag after a few months as he had recovered an claimed some terratry, she didn't like her new tank much either as there weren't many hiding places. as the tank was empty i bought a clarious catfish to fill it, they are very rare here. so after a while my red devil began to beat up my jag again so i moved her back in the other tank with the catfish, which is almost 3 times her size. Ahter coming back in about half an hour they are fighting and going mad, neither of them was giving up and were causing serious damage to each other so i quickly moved her into the 55g guppy tank and then built a rock wall down the middle of the tank separating the two fish. Know today i was at my lfs and saw that they had some other fish from the amphlophus family that were closely related to red devils, i forgot their names but here they are super rare so i got one and put it with my rd in her half of the tank, and u guessed it she started picking on him, it wasn't that bad but i decided to put her back in the guppy tank for a while anyway just for precautions i then started doing some research and found out that if i got a few more devils ( 3 or 4) they would cancel out each others aggression, so i have decides to sell my catfish, take out the rock wall that i built get a few more devils and put them all in the tank together, hopefully they will pair up and breed, DO U GUYS THINK THIS WILL WORK?

No this will not work. Unfortunately you've received bad advice from your local fish store from the very beginning. One Red Devil needs at least 55 gallons of space to itself (75 gallons or more is preferred). Overcrowding Red Devils will NOT cancel out their aggression. There are many problems with doing this:

a) It gives a fish that will grow to 12+ inches even less room to move around in.

b) You will have one Devil in charge and it will injure or kill the others.

c) You said you're hoping for a breeding pair in that 55g tank. That tank size is way too small for a breeding pair-- a pair need at least a 6-foot-long tank. Also, what do you intend to do with the hundreds of fry they will potentially produce?

Please please please do not put multiple devils in that tank. It will not work.

yups...took it out of my mouth lol

Natalie couldn't of said it any better, thats all the advice you need.

With multiple pairs in a tank you will most likely have some aggression issues. One breeding pair can decide that they don't want any other fish in their tank and then go about chasing and killing the rest. The large Convict-looking Red Devils that you describe are probably Barred Midas. You will either end up with a bunch of Red Devil/ Midas crosses or one stable pair with a bunch of damaged or dead tank mates.
