Very nice. I have been looking for some of the sturgeon species that stay a little smaller and can't find anyone in the states that sells them. Any tips?

they are pretty hard to find
i got this one from a guy in florida probably 2 years ago. hes the only person ive seen with diamonds in the last 5 years. i believe they are restricted on import
and all sturgeon seem to be seasonal so they may not be available until next spring.
ive found white's from time to time over the past few years, but they like even colder temps and grow quicker and larger

tips-
keep it cold, these idiots keeping them in tropical temps are killing or torturing their fish, reguardless of what everyone else on here keeps saying
dont overfeed them! yes they will get big, but they shouldnt get super big super fast. water quality is much more important. less food = less water issues
aerate aerate aerate! i always run a big pump to an air stone, as well as filters aggitating the surface like crazy
dont keep anything in the tank for them to get caught on like decor or filter intakes. they cannot swim backwords, so they can wedge themselves into spaces, get stuck and die :(
dont worry about the "they need a circular tank" --- ive had this guy in a 40g to start him eating well, in a 100g stock tank, and a 180g. the round stock tank to the 180 didnt make a difference. he doesnt run into the glass much, and swims slowly, so an occasional bump is no big deal. he knows where the glass is and where the corners are as u can see in the videos.

How large do diamonds get? What is a fair max temp for them? I was leaning toward getting a sterlet, but the temperature issues have me concerned. Mine would be going in a 5000 gallon koi pond. I'm just not sure if it would be too warm in the summer here in VA. I know in the UK keeping sterlets in koi ponds is pretty popular. Not sure how similar the climates are. I'm not gonna try to force something that just won't work. I know the shovelnose sturgeon stays small and likes warmer water, but they are illegal to capture. I saw whites for sale on eBay recently, but they get way too big and like you said they like the colder water.

Anyway I think it would be awesome to have a sturgeon someday. Just not sure it will work for me.

ive found info to be a little vague, being that they are not a US fish

i believe its 4-6' in the wild, so i would be happy to get 3-4' in captivity (this guy is going into a pond as soon as winter passes)
i personally would not want my water temp over 70
i have a pond that is 4' deep right now, and even on 100 degree days in ohio, my water stays in that range on the bottom of the pond. with a deeper pond it should be even cooler

its my understanding that sterlets can tollerate the warmer water (or thats at least how everyone justifies is) but i still believe the colder the better, and again a captive fish likely wont get over 3'
shovelnose are boring and ugly, lol, so that wasnt even an option for me :-)
