Diatom filter...WOWOWOW!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been preaching micron filtration for 10yrs.

You really can't imagine how clean it makes your tank look until you use one.

My tanks always look just fine to me. But after I run even my 2 micron filter thru them overnight. The next day they look so much clearer. Its amazing.

Anyone that wants to pick up a cheap diatom filter look on ebay for a magnum 350 canister filter. They have a micron cartridge that you can add diatom powder to. And have a diatom filter for polishing your water for very little money. I picked up a used one on ebay for like 26 bucks shipped.

I've been using a DF for years and they work miracles for geting rid of algae from the water column quick. Too bad those little diatom skeletons aren't small enough to take care of bacteria blooms too.

lets see...i dont know if its visible here. i never took side shots before cause of how cloudy it looked, so this is all i have. you can see the brownish/green tinge to the water before. also, look at how much brighter the colors look after. as for setup, you can see the two hoses in one of the side shots. i just have it sitting on a step ladder, with the hoses going into the tank

yeah these look like another good option. do you run yours constantly? i just checked ebay, theyre about the same price as the vortex xl

I'm not too hot for the magnums (no pun intended). I have a 350 but there are more parts involved and the smaller internal seals go bad quickly. The vortex filters are simplified with just a motor, jar, main seal, and a bag.

I love my diatom filter for ever and ever :) I run it for three hours a day or so switching a tank each day these things are amazing. It also helps keep up water quality if you have a sick tank. The stuff filters so well it pulls out protozoans ick etc

I run mine around once week on average. like after I stir everything on wc day.

Or if I set up a new tank I run it for the first few weeks constantly.

when I first got mine set up I ran it for a month. And allmost burned the pump up. They clog very quickly. So watch out. lol

I guess new for new they are close. I always just buy other peoples used junk and diy it into something useful to me.

Just curious why you would only run this filter for a few hours/days?

Why not run it 100% of the time like you would a normal external filter?

Because of their filtration power, they can get clogged quickly and can need frequent cleaning/recharging.
