Did anyone else have trouble with their computer yesterday..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since it was just the internet functions, depending on your internet provider ... it could have just been the all the extra people online yesterday. I know I lost about 5mbps yesterday due to the excess people being online, though it went back up once the fireworks started.

I agree with norton being a memory hog, though they are no where near as bad as they used to be. Still, if you don't have a higher end system norton isn't the best.

Avast is the worst of the free AV's ... I would NOT use it (yes I used to remove viruses for a living)

Of the free ones, Microsoft Security Essentials is the best IME (like Aquaticfan said). Throw on Malwarebytes as a passive scan and stay off high risk websites like Facebook and you should be fine.

For pay ones, Kaspersky is a little better than norton and uses less resources, but it's more hands on ... ie asks for permission for programs far more often than norton does so general users like it less.

just set myself up with microsoft essentials and i already have Malwarebytes which was a one time fee of $25.00 so hopefully when my norton runs out in about a week i will put the microsoft essentials to work.. thanks so much.. i agree it was probably overload yesterday.. but i did have a few issues today too.. so not all of it is over usage .. but definitly a improvement over yesterday.. Thanks very much for all the help and advice.. it is good to hear it from knowledgeable people who actually experience the same issues.. one thing that still bothers me is explorer 9 version.. i cannot run that one at all.. it messes up everything.. i had to go back to the older version..

I would never ever use internet explorer again, it's full of more holes than swiss cheese and is horribly coded. With google chrome, firefox, and opera there are quite a few options that won't mess up when you look at it funny. When we sold new computers at the store, we always put one of those browsers on it for free just to keep people from coming in with IE issues.

so even though microsoft just asked me to update and use explorer 10 ... i should just go to another one you mentioned.. i agree both my pcs in the past had internet explorer issues.. this one is no exceptionn

How do you feel about using AVG or panda as free antivirus? I use malwarebytes as well and also will run CCleaner as a maintenance program.

Updating is fine, I have all three of the other browsers on my computer and just use them. Like for forums and such (like right now) I'm on Chrome since it seems to have the fastest response times (Firefox is also rather quick, though I prefer opera over firefox myself). You can't just get rid of IE though, since several of windows internet functions are accessed through IE ... so it's a major pain to try and fix them without having the program available. But I do still have IE 9, haven't let windows update me to 10 yet. Probably won't until it forces the update upon me.

Free AVG is the only thing worse than Avast IME. If free, do Microsoft Security Essentials ... as you can probably tell, I don't like Microsoft at all ... but theirs is truly the best free AV program (and yes, it pains me to say that).

Also, if with comcast they do let you download the middle version of Norton for free ... but you need a fair amount of RAM to run norton. Gaming rigs and such.

I'll look into the Microsoft essentials then, although I'm not a fan of most of their products either. I agree with using chrome over IE for most Web usage other than those few sites that won't load properly unless you're on IE. One of the nice things about using chrome is how easy it is to sync everything with mobile devices running an Android system

As far as browsers go. IE is and has always been the most unsecure most hassles one ive ever seen. I normally use either Firefox or Chrome. Both are fast, customizable, secure and not plagued with the issues of IE. Cant go wrong with either of these browsers.

As far as Avast, AVG or Panda........ All of them are horrible at protection as well as high in resources uses of your machine. Antivirus itself should never be a power program that sucks your resources. It should feel like it does nothing while doing everything.

i learned alot today.. thanks very much for all this info... now to switch to chrome..
