Did I burn off the tips of my Kamfa's lovely fins??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Honestly it would just be a guess, but possibly the salt if those areas took a direct hit. I only add meds as a last resort, often they can cause more harm than good.

Just curious where did u purchase this fish it’s stunning

Thx Mattk1996 -- I got really lucky and came upon Drakaris at my LFS here in Thailand. They always have really nice ZZ Dragons but rarely any Kamfas or the like, so I couldn't resist as I was on the lookout for something pearly like a Blue or Green Texas. I'd tell you the price but you'd likely go into reverse sticker shock :)

Thx agan RD, given you're not here an honest guess is the best I can hope for, and it's also the answer I'm most inclined toward. Much agreed about meds, they often cause a domino effect opening the fish (and people for that matter) up to other problems they likely wouldn't have had if they didn't start adding (usually) harsh chemicals or whatever to their tank to begin with.

As a follow-up regarding possible stray voltage in my tank: today I got a bucket of water and first tested a 23w submersible pump I had laying around; it barely nudged the needle. Took that out and put in the suspect digital thermometer mentioned in post #7 -- the needle jumped to 30-32v! I read that it supposedly needs to be over 50v to really affect your fish but not sure on that figure and either way it's still kinda scary for that small of a device to be putting out that much voltage.

To be fair I'm not sure if it's a malfunction with the device, or whether Drakaris messed it up by attacking it for the first 5 min. like he does with anything put into the tank (even fresh water poured in:) -- the box says waterproof, not Flowerhornproof.

I'm still thinking salt crystals directly onto the fins were the main culprit -- but those salt crystals very possibly might have been somewhat supercharged by that 30v of stray voltage.

So 2 lessons I learned that I hope help others:
-- Don't do a "J.R. Smith" when adding salt (sorry Cavalier fans, couldn't resist) and make sure it's really dissolved before putting in the tank.
-- Do a quick and easy voltmeter test of any new electrical devices added to the tank (or those that have been attacked by feisty fish).

Just a little update regarding Drakaris' trailer fins that were 'burned' short by salt -- it took a while to start, but they finally began growing back (slowly but surely) about a month ago, so about 2 months after the incident.

The re-growth coincided with the installation of a UV sterilizer for his tank, but I really have no way of knowing if that helped kick start the regeneration, or it was just a matter of timing.
