I recently bought a silver aro at this LFS. I was more looking for their honduran red points and trying to sex a pair, but they all looked female. My girlfriend pointed out the arowana. The clerk heard her and started talking to me about them (he didn't know that much). He thought they grew less than an inch a month, but he had already weened it onto flakes. I asked him to prove it because it was quite small, and sure enough, it loved the flakes. Meanwhile, there was another man starting to get interested in the fish once he saw it and overheard us talk about the redeeming qualities (personable, outgoing, big and elegant). I could tell he wanted to buy it and I overheard him say he would put it in the 55 gallon as the employee said it would probably be alright and grow to the tank size.
My girlfriend was telling me, "Get it, you have a bigger tank, and you will take better care of it than that guy." Which I couldn't argue with her, because she is my girlfriend and she's always right, but it was true. They guy didn't even know what the nitrogen cycle was.
So I told the clerk I would take it as if I were there first so I get it sort of thing. He bagged it up and I felt really good about it. I felt I saved this fish from this hillbilly's 55 gallon tank that he had goldfish, dyed mollies, angelfish, and wanted an arowana in (overheard him say how he had the I heart you mollies and they were with the angelfish and goldfish in the 55).
I really really like this fish, but I only have a 125 gallon tank for it at the moment. I am feeding him twice a day with hikari gold baby pellets. I figure the 125 will probably hold him for a little more than a year, but I know I won't want to give this guy up, much less I don't know anyone or any place near me who would be able to even house him.
I want to know if I did the right thing by buying this arowana instead of the guy with the 55 gallon.
