I took a fish back to the shop today that can grow to over 4 feet. I knew he would get big, but was told a maximum of 2 feet and wanting to believe this I had bought him. But now I'm sitting here thinking about it and I'm worried I may have done the wrong thing. Won't he most likely get purchased by someone else who can't adequately house him? I have capacity for a 7X2 tank in the future and I was just thinking that if this is better than what the person who buys him would provide, he may have been better off with me :(

It depends on how trustworthy the shop is that you took him to. IF they are the same ones who understated his eventual size to you then I'd say it was the wrong thing.

You cant be worried about other peoples mistakes you did what was right now you just have to hope the store does the same

Since the stored lied about size or honestly didnt know max size, I'd say there would be no stopping them from selling it to someone else, even if they cant house it properly. I would never take a fish back to an LFS, theres very small amount of responsible keepers compared to the irresponsible/uninformed keepers. In a situation like yours I would have given it to an MFK member.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not actually in the USA so I would be hard pressed finding an MFK'er to give him to. Not trying to point the finger here but why on earth are fish that big even in the trade? If they can ban certain fish surely the massive ones should be too or at least only available via special order.

its a shame the lfs lied about its max size but at least you did the right thing by taking a fish back that was more than you could handle. my hat off to you for that.
i do agree that very large fish are a growing problem in the fish trade and it baffles me why they are still availible without first applying for a permit and a home check getting carried out. much like getting checked for your suitability for adopting a dog or cat from a shelter. granted a system like that would be hard to monitor but im sure the authorities thought that checking all potential adopting families for dogs/cats would be troublesome to police too, yet it works rather well.
or in the states like you have to have a license for venomous animals and big cats (i think), why not add fish that can attain over 2ft to that list.

At the end of the day you did what you thought was best, and thats all that you can do.

For peace of mind perhaps consider going back to the LFS and speaking to the guy there, tell him the type of home that the fish should go to. Don't know if it would help but its at least a better shot.
