BB goes dormant for weeks without a food source before it dies. Every time we want to hatch a new batch of sturgeon eggs at work (months apart) we have to "resurrect" our BB in the fry system. This simply involves adding ammonia and sodium nitrite to get it cooking again, and there is enough of a seed population to cycle the tank in a fraction of the normal time.
So yours is probably dwindling, but not 100% gone. Try seeding your tank with ammonia, fish food, or a light load of fish and watch for subsequent spikes. Treat it like it's gone, but understand that it will probably recover relatively quickly.
