Did the freeze help anybody else??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wish we could have a kill off like that down here in the San Marcos River, but unfortunately it's spring fed and stays about 70 year round. The river's full of tilapia, and there's a plague of plecos competing with endangered and other endemic fish. The most we can do for now is snap them in half while were doing our fish sampling. To give an idea of how bad it is, a little old dam was being cleared out and converted into a kayak course, and while the water was diverted, 600 lbs of plecostomas were pulled out of a small area in one day. I'm glad y'all got a freeze. Study after study shows that natives handle and bounce back from out of the ordinary weather better than non-natives in most cases.

dont talk about florida cold till you experience it. its bone chilling, i can run around up north naked in 20* and be fine, but i come outside here and my body starts braking down.

the iguanas didnt die, they just stopped there boddy or something I forget where I read it.

I lost most of my fish outside, and a couple inside :(

yeah reptiles are cold blooded as most know so when i get cold they slow down a lot, but once it warms up the come back to life. happens at work (petsmart) when we get live reptiles delivered in the colder months. the look dead but after a while they come back to life

You do realize that South and North use the same temperature scale don't you? 20*F is the same in Florida as it is in Ontario, or anywhere else. If you step outside it feels the same to your body, not counting any wind chill. Saying that 20* is colder in florida just sounds foolish.

Anyway, cool that some invasive species were killed off.

Ah, but you forget humidity, cold and dry does not feel as miserable to the human body as cold and damp. This is also why it feels hotter at 95 F. in Orlando than at 105 F. in Las Vegas.

By-the-way it's Feb. 5th and 82 F. outside here.:naughty:

well this was in MI by my lake... there were 3 huge pacu in the lake.... we always tried to catch them but the line always snaped.... so our first freeze kille every last one, 5 showed up dead.....

We haven't been back out to myakka yet, but will be going next week. I'm curious to see if we catch anymore tilapia. I'm sure we will though.
