Diesel engine tank heater (electician guys?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For way less money you can set up a solar hot water heater.. They even work when its cold outside, and don't cost anything to run.

One thing did occur to me right before I decided that this is not practical....

With my Tilapia experiments, I am going to be using oxygen and ozone...The stocking rate will be so high that I'm going to need backup power in case of power loss. So, if I set up "whatever" generator, I could use a smaller one than I would otherwise need, and I could use simple manually controlled valving to direct water, or even simpler, just install the generator in the utility room where I am going to have all of the sumps. It wouldn't be any different then the space heater I have next to my 55gallon barrel that I'm using for a sump right now...

We don't all have perfect ideas all the time....but it takes "way far out" ideas these days to get anywhere. I come up with them pretty much every day. But a lot of them are more like "what are you on?" than just being a little far out. LOL.

If you are thinking that route, then you might just want to pick up a small 5KW Generator from HD or Lowes, heck even Sams Club if you have one. Keep it in your garage for emergencies. When you need it, slip it outside, fire it up, plug your stuff into it and enjoy. Make sure that you have an AWG12 or even 10 extension cord to plug into it. Also, you may as well grab another one to keep the beer fridge cool. Most of the Gensets out there now will run all night on a full tank of gas. You should be able to find one for under a Grand (Ouch!!). Good Luck

Ok, this is what I have decided. I'm going to save more money this way then any of these elaborate ideas I always come up with. First let me explain why the generator was going to be necessary.

I'm going to be doing some Tilapia growouts experimenting with some super-extreme stocking rates. I'm going to have an o2 concentrator, and Ozone, and all that. If I lose power, I bet they will all die in 20 minutes. so I thought I could use a "smaller" generator is I could also take advantage of the heat.

I've decided to skip the generator alltogether. I would need one that is capable of uninterrupted power, and I can't afford all that. So I decided that if they all die, I'll just freeze them all and hopefully sell them as feeders. If no one buys them, my rays will eat em.

I'm going to put that money into getting LP gas at my home and putting in a tankless 95% efficient water heater to get my tax credit from the govment. Then I'm going to get a ventless LP space heater to put near my furnace in the furnace room (my furnace is fuel oil). This will work because All of my sumps and water processing will be done in this room which is on the other side of a wall from the fish room.

The answer was simple. I was looking for complicated solutions. Before Solar, wind, or anything else makes sense, I need to upgrade all of this outdated inefficient stuff that is wasting my dollars.

Plus- I can stop paying the crooked electric company for heating my water. Then I can next get an LP dryer, an LP range, etc...

The best part is...I wanted to get the tankless heater last year, but couldn't afford it because I wanted to spend $5000 onmy race car instead...lol. But last year, all they had were 82% efficient models. This 95% unit just came out a month or so ago!

Can't wait!

Mike
