Diet for young bichirs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Last week I got 2 delhezis and one senegalus, all about 3.5" long. So far they've been eating:

-Hikari Vibra Bites
-frozen bloodworms (they seem to like the Vibra Bites more)
-Hikari Sinking Cichlid Gold pellets

Should I be feeding them anything else? I'm planning to get some Hikari sinking carnivore pellets and feed those instead of the cichlid pellets. I've got some Jumbo Carnisticks on hand for when they get bigger, and I'll get some Massivore too once they're big enough.

They eat at the top of the tank as well as the bottom - is that normal? I guess the most important thing is that they're eating :D.

I would switch from the cichlid gold to the carnivore it is a softer pellet which is easier for the little guys. Definitely do the tilapia you won't regret it

You know your knife, thats really awesome. Best knife for cutting specially if you love cooking.
I got one recently yeah, but being new to knife sharpening I dulled it. Knowing a bit better I'll do it properly next time :)
And yes they're wonderful for slicing :D

I'm feeding twice a day now (just the Vibra Bites and pellets, no more bloodworms), fasting one day a week. Still haven't got a hold of any tilapia yet but will be picking up some tomorrow. I guess I could feed the tilapia to my pike too? He doesn't like pellets... maybe I could start hiding them in pieces of tilapia :D.

Update: I got some tilapia and they love it. The Hikari Sinking Carnivore pellets still seem a bit big for them, but they eat these as well. They also still like the Hikari Vibra Bites. No more frozen bloodworms.

You can always break the carnivore pellets in half or smaller pieces if necessary. That's what I do when I want to feed young bichirs pellets.
