difference between a green terror and a gold saum??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry if i popped the lid on a can of worms..

i just aquired a "green terror" and was wanting to make sure that was what it really is.. im one that likes to know exactly what is in my tank, and what sex it is..

as soon as its loses its shyness, or i can sneak up on it , ill post a picture..
it looks male and is a beautiful fish of about 7-8 inches..

again sorry about opening that can, and thinks for explaining it to me:)

ok after checking him out

he has black scales surrounded by green.the top of his dorsal fin and tail is a gorgous fire orange color, and his fins on the side look fire orange also..

so if i understood all i read, he is a gold saum strain of green terror..

I suspect this may have alot to do with local aquarium culture. In my area most LFS and a few pet stores appear to be spot on with African Cichlid indentification, and many are labeled for sale strictly by scientific names. However, I have been learning that almost everyone in my area is wrong on Neo-tropicals. They are never listed by the scientific or precise name, and are often flat out wrong. All cichla species are usually labeled "Peacock Bass", Festae and Mayans are both called "Red-Terror", and numerous Herichthys all labeled "Texas Cichlid".

And i'll add,

was at the LFS and saw a tank full of Blue Acara's labeled as green terror's,easy to tell the diffference "i thought".

sometimes it is just laziness . . . I just bought an herichthys (I believe it's cyanoguttatus, but I'm not 100% sure) in a tank that was labeled "Convicts"

in fact, over the last several weeks I have seen Saums, Dempseys, Convicts and this poor lone "Texas" fish all in that tank at various times, and always the label just said "Convicts"
