Difference between George's Armatus' and Isaac's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the ragged tail is apparent on "Raider" as that fish has a very unique tail. All the others I have seen look just like mine.

I think the growth and lighter color are just charecteristics of the younger fish. Or possibly just a darker color due to location origin. Kinda like comparing Peruvian to Colombian Motoros, one local has a tendency to be darker.

As far as growth rate........the smaller ones are obviously easier to convert from live food. Most of the owners of G's fish have had a very tough time getting off live. With the younger ones being brought up in a tank I think they are less picky and just tend to grow faster as they don't have to re-learn how to live after being caught. Again kinda the same as comparing wild caught rays to captive bred.

I think it all depends on the fish itself. Looks to me after looking through some older pics (on the other site's pinned ID thread) that some of the ones G brought in were lighter colored like the ones from R.W. Unless there has been someone else to bring these things in successfully.

I think Mike at H20 brought some in himself but I'm not sure who was the source whether direct from South America or through what wholesaler. The ones Michael has I believe are from H20?

Im not 100% sure, but it does seem that the riverwonders fish went from 4" and are all around 10" now in just a few months. George brought his in larger at like 8-10" so perhaps that is why they seemed to grow slower.

That's what I mean't it may be too early for those with RW armatus to say theirs for sure grow faster than the ones from Shark Aquarium. Also I know people like unknownuza13 was trying to get his off of live for a while so his wasn't getting some of the power feedings that some of the people from RW's have been giving theirs with live food.

Im pretty sure George's came from Vinny, but when I asked Isaac he sort of hesitated and then said Orinico basin. I wonder if they are actually from Peru, after all isnt Venezuala shut down? Also in the stickied thread above there are pictures of peruvian armatus and most have more colored fins...some of those have very vibrantly colored fins.

Also Id like to add that it doesnt matter either way Im just making discussion....

It's possible. Honestly I'm just adding food for thought so to speak to help find answers a little easier. I've never seen peru armatus(I'll have to look) but I've been told so many things from suppliers about Venezuala, I heard it was shut down but as long as you can get the fish to a neighboring country you can send them here. As gulpers come from there also? Not to mention the most beautiful pbass comes from Orinico. :) I've learn to never say never when someone says you can't get a fish from one country to here even if at random. Again just food for thought.

It's good that you brought up this discussion though. Whether they're differences or even if they are the same it helps further the hobby. :)

I'm new to Armatus, and learn as much as I can, so I like those differences you observed and put up in this discussion (color, tail, growth rate). From my experience with arowana, they tend to grow really fast when they're under 12" mark, and slow down after that. For the color or the ragged tail, I can only think it's changed due to age... Of course, I'd love to hear input from people who has kept Armatus for a while...

i have no experience with the armatus, but i've noticed that alot of fish are like that. when i first started in the aquarium hobby i got 5 orange tiger barbs to begin. i tried looking for some again and i can't find any orange ones their all silver or albino or green ones. around here fish look different from lfs to lfs so it doesn't surprise me.

their growth spurt is deff from 7" to 12" (in my experience). also i can see mine growing alot now since i put him in a bigger tank. i noticed that my big one has more of a jagged tail now since hes older. ill post a pic of his tail soon

what's up..I got raider when he is about maybe 12-13inches about 5months ago. (correct me nick if I'm wrong). he's growth is amazing..13inches to 18inches+ here is some pictures. 12inches and now 18+inches ... like to share pictures .

All the fish from riverwonders have a red adipose fin....and they get really big... 3 feet ??? I would think body colors would vary with surroundings and diet

none of the fish from RR would be that big yet. the one i got from RR dosnt have any red at all. im sure u are right about colors varying with surroundings, diet, and tank size. im sure we are going to see alot of problems with the armatus, who's owners who arent planning on getting a bigger tank. i will post pics of both of mine, but i think we will only see characteristics that vary with age, and fish to fish differences.
