Table salt

Epsom salt

Kosher salt

Sea salt (like the expensive one used for food seasoning)

Aquarium salt

etc.?

What salt is good to use as an antiseptic or preventative additive in freshwater tanks (specifically a 20gal angel tank, with bamboo plants & a 72gal bare bottom discus tank) - or would you not recommend using any salts?

I recall someone stating aquarium salt is a waste of money.

thx for all your feedback!

if i remember right, aquarium salt is basically epsom salt, someone chime in here and let me know if my memory servers me correct of not.

Table Salt: Sodium Chloride may or may not have Iodine.
Epsom Salt: Magnesium Sulfate
Kosher Salt: Large grain table salt without Iodine
Sea Salt: Evaporated salt water, has a very length component list
Aquarium salt: Really large grain table salt without iodine Used to prevent or reduce stress in fish

Synthetic Sea Salt: Lab made sea salt for setup and maintenance salt water fish tanks. As far as I know evaporated sea salt is not used for Aquarium maintenance in the US.

I know that table salt contains a bit of iodine. We apparently need it to function properly, and you get the proper dose by putting it in the salt and then hoping you consume enough salt to maintain normal function. Sea salt doesn't contain as much, if at all. Kosher salt is simply larger granules of salt. It may or may not contain iodine (the stuff in my kitchen contains no iodine). I do not know anything about aquarium and epsom salts. All I know is to use small doses of aquarium salt to treat minor problems, such as injuries and ich. I've been told (and have used) from 1 tbsp/10gallons up to 2 tbsp/5 gallons.

alright, so i did some reading, as well as some people posting after me, i stand corrected, epsom salt is bad news. but i did find this article kind of interesting. though it is more opinionated than most i read, it does offer some sound controversy to the use of salt in aquariums.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't red sea evaporated sea salt. I thought that was their whole gimick. If it is we sell it by the boat load at the shop.
