Difference in BGK size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't take my speculations to the bank... Thats just from my own observations with other species.. and as most people know.. not every species is even remotely like another. The larger being dominante is def a possability. Aggression may be goign on at 2am when it's pitch dark and no-ones awake. But it would be likley to have some signs of physical trama, split fins, "rub-marks" as most scaleless fish ime seem to look like they rubbed something.. but it is actual bite marks.

I would def not rule out aggression at this point. It's been long said NOT to mix BGK's together because of con-specific aggression. IMO unless someone intends to dedicate a tank to breeding these fish it's still not a good idea to keep more then 1 in a set-up.

I would keep my fingers crossed you have an immature pair.. but I would also be prepared for aggression issues.

Thanks, i've really only seen the larger of the BGKs with some slight split fins and 2am is usually when i feed them but i'll certainly keep an eye out

hey there.. wouldnt a 55g be a lil too small for 4 knifefish? i have a 11" BGK in a 50G now. he used to be with my 24" aro and with an rtc coming he has his own tank. the other thing ABKs are a little aggro. i did have an ABK too but he kept harassing my aro who was almost twice his size then (aro was 16" and the ABK was 8") so i had to give away the ABK. and being nocturnal they are super active when the lights go out.well as long the bgk is eating well why worry? could be nothin at the end really. jus see if you can chip in a larger tank though.cheers :).

thanks, a 55g tank would be too small for a medium sized BGK but my largest fish is about 7 inches and i have a lot of filtration on it so it's not too small bio load-wise or physically yet. when the fish need a larger tank i will get them a bigger tank, i've done my research;)

hmm.. aggro ABKs? my ABKs are the most docile thing in my tank, i have never seen anything aggressive from them at all, but i will certainly keep an eye out.

i'm not really worried, just curious that's all

It's more likely a dominance issue. The bigger one is obviously feeding more and is possibly bullying the smaller one. While the bullying may not be extreme, there is a possibility of just nudging it out of the way or pushing it around into hiding. Pheromones released by the larger one may suppress the growth of the smaller one.

Thanks, the pheromones is a possibility

Do BGK's drop more pheremones then other fish? I suppose it would depend heavily on the OP's water change routine and filter set-up. The stunting by chemical means is def possible but is it possible? curiouse...
