This is a classic setup, worked beautifully for me back in the day:
Discus
Cardinal tetras
Corydoras sp.
 
Boesemani rainbowfish and rainbow cichlids,
Senegal bichirs and leopard bushfish,
Elliots cichlids and swordtails,
EBJD and roseline barbs,
Three spot gouramis and rainbow sharks,
Mascara barbs and giant danios,
Angelfish and hoplo catfish...
