Hi can you guys post the pictures of different frontosas and let us know what kind they are Thanks in advance.

There is only 1 frontosa, any others are hybrids

? hybrids? do you mean since they are Cyphotilapia gibberosa and not Fronts? the true 7 stripe... there is a thread on here some where that links a paper, thats say now they do not believe that gibberosa or Frontosa are different, but merely morphs...

Yes mike, what i should have said is there is only one true frontosa, the rest are hybrids/morphs.
There are many species/morphs/hybrids of cichlid that you can buy at your lfs that don't truely exist in the wild.

I guess they are all Cyphotilapia. They are broken up into Frontosa, SP North and Gibberosa, then further identified by what spot they were collected from in lake Tang. They aren't believed to be hybrids but morphs of some distant relative. The original Frontosa is the 7 stripe collected from Kigoma, so if you want to be a stickler then yeah there is only one Frontosa (well two, kigoma and bolumbouro), the common SP North has Burundi, and the Gibberosa are listed as Zaire.

Some Guy Takahashi something or other is doing the research and many of the Front lovers will go by what this person says is the final verdict as to what species exist and if they can be labled together anymore.

Until then, I knew exactly what you meant with the word Frontosa. They are all commonly labled as Frontosa, along with their collection point.

just remember that these morphs are all natural... They occur in the wild, and the morphs are the higher priced. However, I too love all the different types. I have no fronts, but do have some Zaire Blues, a kipili and two burundi... they are all great, I do know that people do not mix them in the tank...(well people do it but not deemed acceptable)...

There is 2 species under the genus Cyphotilapia.
frontosa and gibberosa.
"species north" was sort of a place holder for what people in the hobby assumed would be a third species.
Many in the hobby thought that the 7 stripe Kigoma would retain the frontosa name, and that burundi, kavalla, karilani etc would get its own name.
Dr. Takahashi while doing examinations decided that burundi, kavalla, karilani, and kigoma are the same species, just different morphs.

The second species is gibberosa.
gibberosa is the southern half of the lake, frontosa is the northern part of the lake.
they are different by amount of rows of scales, and amount of teeth.

Off the top of my head.
Frontosa are, kavalla, karilani, burundi, kigoma, bangwe/boulomboro, maswa.

Gibberosa are, ikola, mpimbwe, sibwesa, tanzanite, kipili, bismark, samazi, fulwe, chaitika, sumbu, sangu, gombe, kalumba, tembwe, kapampa, moba, kitumba, mabilibili, makula.

i'm sure i forgot a few.
good luck getting pix of all posted.
do a good search on the names i listed.
should be able to find most of them.

So that was the big news we were waiting for from the Takahashi dude? I thought it was gonna be something profound - but hey at least there is no more sp north. I don't think there should be a Gibberosa either just plain old frontosa with their collection point, is good enough for me.

Frontosa is a strange enough name Gibberosa is just plain gibberish. If I weren't in Kuwait I could post a pic of a Moba, Karilani, and Burundi.

Anyway, sorry for swiping your thread aquatic_wonders.
